Cleveland Love: b.fazio salon

I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with beauty salons.

On one hand, I love the sense of renewal going to a beauty salon brings. There is no better way of saying “out with the old, in with the new” than getting your hair cut/styled/colored. And who doesn’t love the feeling of being pampered? I certainly do!

Most importantly, if I find a salon that delivers wonderful results, like Cleveland’s own b.fazio salon, I love the final product.

On the other hand, I hate the amount of time an appointment can take. I am not talking about how long it takes to physically cut hair. I am not talking about the necessary wait for hair color to set. Those are fully expected. I am talking about salons that overbook their stylists. I don’t want, nor do I need, to have 5 people working on me during the length of a visit. In that instance it becomes obvious that the salon is more concerned with squeezing a profit out of every minute than providing a pleasant experience for their clients. This is my biggest pet peeve.

No matter what you may love/hate about going to be a beauty salon, one thing is certain:  a pleasant client experience and strong client-stylist relationships are important to everyone.

b.fazio salon

Which brings me to a gem of a salon located right here in Cleveland, Ohio: b. fazio salon.

I came across b.fazio quite by accident.  I had been googling to see if I could find a local provider for my beloved Lipstick Queen products and came across a mention of the salon.  Curious, I did some more googling and was astounded to learn that owner Barbara Fazio is a nationally-renowned hair and makeup artist.  She’s worked her magic on everyone from  Gwyneth Paltrow to Eminem.  And she’s living in my own backyard!  Who knew.  You can read more about her background here and here.

Still, I didn’t immediately call to make an appointment.  I had been a longtime client of one of the city’s popular AVEDA concept salons and I was generally satisfied with my experiences there.  Until one day late last year.

I found myself at said AVEDA salon and lamenting that 4 hours had passed and I still wasn’t done.  With a simple cut and single-color process.  I looked around at all of the stylists who were clearly over-booked.  I looked at the haircuts being styled around me and it suddenly occurred to me: everyone looked the same.  Every single cut was a variation of 1 or 2 different styles.   It was a factory, not a salon.  And I wanted out.

The next time I made an appointment I found myself dialing b.fazio’s number.

The differences between Barbara’s salon and my prior salon-of-choice were immediately evident:

  • b.fazio is open by appointment only. This creates an intimate and personal experience for each client.
    • When I requested a color and cut, Barbara immediately scheduled me for two hours.
    • Guess what?  I was done in exactly two hours.  Not four, not five.  Two.
  • b.fazio, although a small space by design, is sleek, sassy and fun.
    • The words “Sleek, sassy and fun” also describes the staff!
  • b.fazio doesn’t advertise.  Their client-base is a result of word-of-mouth recommendations.
  • If you are a product junkie, like me, you’ll appreciate the fact that b.fazio uses products that generally are not found in the Cleveland area.
  • Barbara and her colorist did not push their products on me.  I actually sought them out myself.
  • The staff is personable, professional and talented.
    • They will consult with you to determine your needs before they get to work.
  • Services are well-priced and worth it.
    • Considering the personal attention paid to clients and the talent at the salon, the price is on par with other high-end salons in the Cleveland-area.

I can say with complete confidence that I have never had a more pleasant and personal experience at a salon.

I was delighted with the salon’s intimate atmosphere and even happier with the talented staff.  They transformed my hair from its natural ash brown color to a gorgeous reddish-brown.  The cut was versatile and beautifully executed.  Most importantly, the true test of a good haircut: I was able to recreate it at home with no problem!

If you are a Clevelander and are searching for a new salon, or just someone looking for a change, I highly recommend b.fazio.  The salon really is one of Cleveland’s hidden gems.  I was hooked after one visit, and am getting ready to make my second appointment!

For a full list of their services, which include everything from a basic cut and style to makeup application and Brazilian blowouts, check out the b.fazio service page here.   You won’t be disappointed!

What do you love/hate about beauty salons?

While preparing this post I became curious about what others “love” and “hate” about the salon experience, so I posed the question on twitter.

I found myself agreeing with the loves…

… and the pet peeves shared with me.

In case you haven’t guessed… I definitely have developed a love/love relationship with b. fazio!

What about you? What are some of the things that you love/hate about going to a hair salon?

What defines a great salon experience for you?

Finding a good hairdresser is hard! I found one I really like who works just down the street. It’s funny because I rarely have a problem with cookie-cutter hairstyles or not having my hair cut in one hour or cut and color in two hours. Maybe I’m just lucky. But finding a good hairstylist is really important! Glad you found someone great.

    Love,
    Heather

It sounds like you have been lucky in the stylist department – hang on to the person you have! I am happy that I finally found someone I love, just wish it had happened much sooner!

I’ve gotta say that I’ve always viewed my beauty routine as a private pleasure. I always feel REALLY awkward in salons and am rarely able to enjoy myself. I’m working on that, because I think that there are ways for it to be a really pleasurable experience and even a bonding one between stylist and customer.

In fact, the one salon I really grew to love was one in which the stylist was intuitive about my comfort level. He didn’t press when I was tight-lipped about questions he’d ask, and he didn’t overshare about his own life. After going to him for a couple of years we struck up one of those bonds that can only come when you see someone grow and change over the years–I talked about my then-boyfriend’s alcoholism (no idea how that started) and he told me he’d been seven years sober. It was really fascinating to have unwittingly witnessed his comfort and confidence grow during those years. Like many stylists I’ve interviewed for my blog, he and I both understood that the stylist-client relationship had to grow like any other–had either one of us been just straight-up chatterboxes we wouldn’t have developed a real relationship

Um, but that’s off-topic. No pushy sales staff! That’s my #1 pet peeve. Like you wrote, let them come to you.

I think it’s amazing that you built that type of relationship with your stylist. It sounds like he is someone that you have been going to for some time, and those relationships will always get stronger WITH time, for sure. Having some common ground to build that relationship ON is key. In your case, he understood what your needs were and didn’t overstep them. That is a wonderful thing!

As a aside note, I love the experience of going to a salon. It’s one of the few times you can get completely pampered and just relax. If you can let yourself go and enjoy it, it can be a beautiful thing!

Thanks for including my tweets! It’s so hard to find the right salon. Whenever I think I’ve finally found a good one, they end up messing up my hair around visit #3. So far so good with the new one, though, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

I haven’t had that experience yet (where it starts off good, but goes bad) but i did have a couple stylists that I liked who then moved away. I couldn’t justify a 2 hour trip to keep seeing them! Hope your new stylist works out for you!

Great review!! Thanks for using my tweet! I did a similar post about a local salon/hairstylist in my neck o’ the woods – Jo Brandon back in January. Finding someone you can trust is SO important!!

I know the feeling, doll. There have been times when I have walked out of a salon with products that cost more than my services did! I have a problem, but that is OK. It’s a fun one 🙂

Since my mom has been doing my hair at home my whole life, I am beyond spoiled in this department! I have gone to her salon a couple times to have my hair done there, and it is so humiliating! I hate it! Nothing worse than sitting there with color and a plastic cap on your head for everyone to see. Gah.
It’s so good when we find the right hairdresser…they are VITAL!

You are definitely lucky in that you have such a talented mom who can work her magic in private! Your hair is perfect.

I am past the humiliation aspect of having my hair done in public after all these years, but I have to say that the privacy you get at b.fazio is an added bonus. LOVE.

I totally understand what you mean about having a love/hate relationship. For me though, the hardest part is trying a new place and not knowing if I am going to like it, if it will work out, etc… I mean, if I am going to pay over $50 for a cut I want to have some kind of assurance that it will turn out amazingly wonderful. But that is not always the case. I used to think the cheap salons were a crap shoot, but the expensive ones can be just as unpredictable. – Katy

I agree… I think word of mouth is more telling than price. If a salon and/or a stylist has a great reputation, its usually for a reason, regardless of price. Every time I have tried someone knew its been nerve-wracking – it is our hair after all! Luckily this last time it worked out beautifully. I hope you have found a good one in Boston!

Your comments about what makes for a great salon experience and the kudos for Barbara’s style of business and the style she delivers are right on the mark. It might also be worth sharing that the care and courtesies you describe also applies male manes…..and she is terrific at taming the manes of the many men who also know a gem when they (or their girlfriends or spouses) find it.

Thank you for your comment. I am not surprised to hear that Barbara also does equally fine work on males. In some way I think men’s cuts can be even more challenging than women’s – finding a great stylist is key for both sexes!

I love my hair stylist. I don’t feel pressured to buy anything. I have been very loyal to him because he does great work. He takes extra time to style my hair, and gets my style. Also, we usually can carry a fun conversation.

Gosh, salons are tricky—- its hard to find one you love and then getting an appt can be challenging… plus I have bangs so my hair has to be trimmed regularly.

I am lucky enough to have a stylists as friends both in LA and in ATL… otherwise I would be nuts!

Nice. Stylist friends on both coasts – that is definitely helpful!

I agree, finding the right salon is very tricky. That’s why word of mouth is so important – although sharing the love means even MORE challenging scheduling, for sure.
