Friend Friday: Striking a Blog-Life Balance

Have I mentioned how much I love Friend Friday?  I really, really do.

Joining this group was one of the best moves that I have made since I began blogging last July.   Katy Rose of Modly Chic created something very special when she began this group.  Not only is the Friend Friday group a supportive community, it is also an invaluable resource.

  • The topics cover a wide array of subjects that can be fun, educational, inspirational, thought-provoking and even controversial.
  • The participants are some of the brightest, nicest and most talented bloggers out there today.
  • I learn something new every. single. week.

This week was no exception to the above.  The topic selected is one that will impact just about every single blogger out there unless they are purely a hobby blogger: striking a balance between your blogging and the rest of your life.

This is something that I have admittedly struggled with, especially in recent months.  More than a few times I have thought of throwing in the towel.  More than a few times I have thought “this is it – I can’t handle this anymore.”

When this first happened it was simply due to blogger burnout caused by lack of time.  There weren’t enough hours in the day to fit blogging into my busy life.   So what did I do?  I took a step back and re-evaluated.  I made some changes and realized it was OK not to post everyday and it was OK to step away completely when I needed to.  I still realize that.

So, why did thoughts of quitting begin swimming in my head again more recently?  It wasn’t until I began writing this post that I figured it out.  It wasn’t due to burnout.  No.  Not burnout.  It was because I was disappointed.

I was disappointed in myself and the time (or lack of) that I was dedicating to this blog.  There are so many things that I want to do with the blog this year (see question 5 below)… and as the weeks pass by I feel like I am not accomplishing any of it.   Being the ambitious perfectionist that I am, that just isn’t acceptable.

In this case stepping back isn’t what I need to do.  What I need to do now is get organized… and this week’s Friend Friday questions helped spur me into action!

1. When it comes to prioritizing your life, in what place does blogging fall? Blogging clocks in right after my career on the priority list, but it is a very close race between those two.  I think it goes without saying that there are more important things in each of our lives than blogging or our careers or our hobbies.  Things like the people we care about and their – and our own –  well-being.

Image via Google Images

That being said, my career ranks pretty high on my list of priorities and blogging is within passing distance.   When I am passionate about something I give it 110%.  When I lose that fire, I also begin to lose interest, and that is the precipice I am standing on right now.  On one side is my career, which I still care deeply about, but after 9 years I have started to yearn for something new.  Something different.  Something more challenging.

Enter blogging.  It may not always seem this way to my readers, but I put my heart and soul into this blog and into building relationships with my readers and fellow bloggers.  Blogging, and everything related to it, excites me.  Challenges me.  Inspires me.  That is why it is quickly climbing up my priority ladder.

2. We all wish we had more free time to dedicate to blogging and all it entails. What are your tricks for taking advantage of the time you do have to be as productive as possible? I wish I had some words of wisdom to share here.  The truth is I don’t have any tricks because I am still trying to sort out the best way to manage my time and still dedicate 110% to this blog.

Lately my typical day has gone something like this:

  • 6:15AM – wake up
  • 7:45AM – drive to work
  • 8:30 – 7:00PM – work
  • 7:45PM – arrive home and eat dinner
  • 8:00PM – work out
  • 8:45PM – relax
  • 10:00PM – 12:00 (or 1:00)AM – blog activities
  • SLEEP
  • WEEKENDS: Friend and Family Time

I try to sneak in more blogging in time when I can – lulls at work, while I am relaxing, if I skip a workout,  but I haven’t figured out a magical formula that works for me.  What I do know is that I need to do something because I do have ambitions for this blog.  Big ambitions. But before I start burning the proverbial candle at both ends, I need to get organized or that candle will burn out faster than you can say “publish.”

Katy’s recent post “How to Blog More Often without More Time” gave me a few ideas that I am going to try to implement to see if that helps.   The one thing I am good at is keeping track of potential blog topics that pop in my head – the notes feature on my iPhone has been invaluable where that is concerned.

3. Have you discovered any short-cuts that makes blogging easier or more time efficient? As I mentioned above, my iPhone is a big help where keeping track of ideas is concerned.  It is also a life saver when it comes to emails and social media.   I do not, however, use it to read other blogs or reply to comments because I really prefer a larger screen for that.  I plan to purchase the iPad2 and hope that will make it easier to read and comment “on the run” so to speak.

Another thing I recently decided I need to try is an editorial calendar.  Joanne Faith’s post “How to Tame Your Blog With an Editorial Calendar” really made an impression on me and I think a calendar might be just the tool I need to finally get organized in a way I would like.   I plan to install the WordPress Editorial Calendar plugin this weekend, so we’ll see how that goes.

4. Do you have an editorial calendar or something similar that helps you plan ahead? As stated above, I do not have one at the moment.  My blog posts have been fairly spontaneous.  I write about what catches my interest at the time.  I have a very loose schedule that I adhere to for now:

I used to do scheduled “Me Wants It” and “Whatever Wednesday” posts but I have come to realize that I like to be a bit more spontaneous than that.  In addition, certain topics I post about can’t really be scheduled (i.e. controversial subjects that suddenly arise).  That being said, I do have ideas that can be scheduled and researched, like this piece on corsets, and I could use an editorial calendar to keep me on track with those types of posts.

5. If time wasn’t an issue what you would be doing on your blog/for your blog that you aren’t doing now? Oh lordy, is this a trick question?  What wouldn’t I be doing might be a better question.  If I could put the time and energy I wanted into the blog I would be:

  • Re-designing the site and header
  • Tweaking the SEO details on all of my past posts
  • Re-evaluating my tags and categories
  • Researching and eventually adding an “advertise with me” page
  • Building relationships with PR companies
  • Building and/or strengthening relationships with fellow bloggers
  • Building and/or strengthening relationships with blogging communitis like Independent Fashion Bloggers
  • Publishing more tutorials and/or blog improvement tips
  • Network, network, network!

What about you – how do you balance blogging and the rest of your life?  Is it an easy task for you?

Another great post that truly resonates with me. It does bring some relief to know I am not the only one who struggles with time and balance. I simply adore blogging, but as stated, it is a lot of work. I tried to print a calendar like you suggested in your last post and of course my printer ran out of ink. So I am going to find the wordpress calendar plugin. What has helped me is scheduling posts, that way I don’t have to worry about creating content during the week. I can just focus on networking and reading other blogs. I am just so grateful to be part of a community who shares ideas and suggestions on how do be a better blogger. Thanks again for this post.

Anyway, first time here and glad to have found you. Looking forward to more posts!

Oh my gosh, I want to do everything with my blog. Completely redesign the look of it (and my website), come up with a new name and domain and write better content. Sigh. It’s a lot of work isn’t it!

I really enjoy you blog! Hope you continue with it.

Hi Jodi – thank you for stopping by! I think a lot of us have similar “to do” lists for our blogs. I just checked yours out and I quite like it. You have a really clean design and I LOVE your style. Looking forward to getting to know you better!

Thank you for sharing your experiences with burn out & the like – it let’s me know that I’m not the only one!

You’ve fueled my desire for an iPhone though… arghh, want!

Hi Joanne, you certainly aren’t the only one! I think burnout happens to just about everyone at some point in time. Especially if you have large ambitions for your blog!

As for the iPhone – I’d die without mine. Now Bloglovin’ has an app for the iPhone as well, which is making blog reading a lot more convenient as well!

Some of your responses are so similar to mine. I think the thing that catches me and keeps it in perspective is the knowledge that the blog, no matter how devoted I become to it, will support me financially.

Hi Terri – thank you for commenting! I truly think many of us experience the same difficulties with our blogs. Sometimes it seems the more time we WANT to devote, the less is AVAILABLE to us. I am really impressed that you are able to maintain your schedule on your blog. 5 days a week is a lot of content, but you manage quite well!

I can so relate to the funk and the desire to throw in the towel, as we’ve talked about. But whatever frustrations you may feel, just know that they do not extend through your blog and/or to your readers. It’s all entirely behind the curtain because everything from up here looks like perfection. Truly. In all the time I’ve been reading your blog I’ve never known you to publish an off post or anything that wasn’t completely fascinating. I’m your biggest fan, you already know that.

I just installed the editorial calendar plugin the other day! I haven’t used it much yet, but it’s gloriously organized. I don’t tend to really schedule things, but I do have ideas that linger (such as the Helena post and the Photoshop tutorial) and the calendar will give me a place to set them up, edit and tweak, all while keeping it on a schedule. I like. I was actually going to ask you if you have a iPhone; my cell (which boasted the supremely high-tech feature of…text messaging) is on the outs and I’m thinking of investing in a smartphone. It’s so intimidating because there always seems to be something new coming out. I’m afraid if I get the iPhone 4 now the iPhone 5 will come out in a few months and make it obsolete. But it seems like it’s really beneficial for bloggers. And I’d like to have more capabilities while I’m on the go. Plus, I keep wanting to be a bit more social on networking sites like Twitter and I think that would help a lot.

But anyway. Have fun getting organized and keep doing what you’re doing; I’ve no doubt you’ll run down that gorgeous-looking bloggy to-do list in no time. I’m so excited to see what the future has in store for you over here! xo

Casee, I don’t know what I would do without you. You are one of the nicest people I have met in these months that I have been blogging. Truly. Your words inspire me whenever I am feeling down. I think I might need to start an inspiration board of sorts with quotes! It is really nice of you to say that. I think that the reason you haven’t seen any “off” posts is because i simply choose to NOT post when I am not feeling creative. I am a firm believer that you can’t force creativity. You have to feel it! As for being my biggest fan – the feeling is mutual, you know I am yours as well!

I haven’t had an opportunity to play with the editorial calendar plug-in yet. I have some things to take care of the next few days, but I am hoping that after that I’ll be able to sit down with it. I’d love to hear how it is working for you. As for the iPhone, I think you’d be OK with the current model. I actually didn’t upgrade from the 1st generation iPhone until a few months ago because I didn’t think the upgrades were all that useful until this version. I am thrilled with mine, it really does make life much easier!

Thanks again for all of your encouragement and support – both on- and offline! XOXO

It is v e r y apparent every time that I read your blog that you put your heart and soul into it. 🙂
Sometimes, I just spend hours reading blogs instead of finishing my own posts… yours is definitely one of them! I have a weird schedule due to work and time zones but, I try to balance it by doing most via mobile, and scheduling posts so that I can enjoy my weekends. It is important to have balance and often difficult with life obligations i.e. a job etc., but definitely needed.
You must know this that when I tell you that your blog and writing touches so many people beyond your sight. I’m excited to see the new things that you have planned for the future of your blog.

Madison thank you so much! I really don’t know what to say in response to some of the comments I have received, yours included. It is extremely gratifying to hear that my ramblings connect with others on some level. Blogging has done a lot for me – its made me rediscover my own love of writing and reinforced my love of fashion, but most of all its connected me to some amazing people like yourself! Thank you so much for the support.

I can totally relate to everything you said above. It’s frustrating when you have a plan for your blog and it never seems like you have the time to make it happen. You are brilliant though. Everything you write is engaging, original, passionate, genuine, and of the greatest quality. I find you incredibly inspiring!

I’ve been thinking more about an editorial calendar lately. Right now, I have no schedule. Everything happens as it happens. I like the spontaneity of not having a set schedule but I think I need a little more structure so that I can be more consistent. I’m curious and excited to read Joanne’s post about it. Happy Friday to you!! xoxo

Brooke, thank you so much for your inspiring words! I feel the same way about you – I adore you and your blog and am thankful that I was able to find you through G&G!

Re: the editorial calendar – I am much the same right now. Everything is pretty spontaneous. I loved that at first, because I have to be structured enough at work, but i think I need to bring some of that over into my blogging. Otherwise I’m going to go batty! Happy Monday to you!

First I want to say that I do see the passion that you put into this blog! That’ what always keeps me coming back! 🙂

Balancing it all is such a struggle, and I too have sooo many things I want to the do with my blog and the days just keep on passing! I am the biggest champion of editorial calendars! It helps keep you on task when it comes to accomplishing what you want to do with your blog. And it doesn’t have to be rigid, you can always give yourself wiggle room to be spontaneous and you can always move posts around. The key is that you have a place to start! 🙂

Please don’t throw in the towel just yet! Just grab one of those awesome ideas you have and just run with it! It will surely invigorate you and give you a new blogging wind!

I remember reading your post about editorial calendars. I think using one will definitely put me on the right track with organization. I have a million thoughts running through my head at any given moment, so having them all written down can only help.

Don’t worry – I am not going anywhere. I love this too much to ever give it up! 🙂 XOXO

this may not necessarily help at all.. i know that when i am feeling disappointed in myself people can tell me a million times that they think i’m doing great and it might not help.. but regardless i still feel compelled to say it — i think you have no reason to be disappointed in yourself. you have done so much with your blog, and i know you’re going to do even more amazing things. you’re a wonderful, passionate and intelligent writer and your posts bring things to light in new and informative ways. i know you want to do more with your blog. i think we all do. even now that i technically spend over 8 hours a day doing something blog related, i still feel like i don’t have enough time to do all that i want. i know it sounds crazy. i know people would read that and probably think “ugh i would kill to spend that much time blogging” but the truth is, the more time you’re ALLOWED to dedicate to a blog, the more that is expected of you and said blog. so at the end of the day, there is never enough time and we must all just do our best with the time we’re given. which is why i’m very happy you don’t plan to stop blogging but are not feeling reinvigorated about it. because if you stopped blogging, i would be so sad.

thank you for sharing your thoughts, personal struggles and triumphs. you’re an inspiration!

Kristy – YOU are the real inspiration. When I think about how much you have accomplished in these last few months with your blog I just feel so proud of you. You are a testament to the fact that our dreams could be within reach if we work hard and are passionate about what we do. Oh – and are super-talented like you! I know how hard you worked to get where you are today, and seeing your tweets and FB updates and reading your blog posts inspires me every day!

Thank you for your kind words…. they truly do mean everything. I think sometimes the more passionate we are about something, the harder we are on ourselves. Hence the disappointment. But witha support group like this, we always prevail! 🙂 XOXO

I have a feeling that a LOT of us are feeling this way. I realized, too, that I keep signing up to participate in blog events. As innocuous as they seem at first, it becomes yet another thing I need to keep top of mind.

Personally, I’m glad you haven’t thrown in the towel. I thoroughly enjoy reading your posts and dig getting to know more about you. I can relate to being disappointed in not being able to meet and exceed personal expectations, but you know what? We’re not alone. I think there’s a life lesson in there somewhere. I’m working on reducing everything to bite-size increments so that I can actually DO them instead of being overwhelmed by them.

I’d rather see you take a break any day than have you stop. I’m sure I’m not alone in that thought.

Thank you Fabienne! I am really happy that I’ve had the chance to get to know you better the last couple of months.

I think you are exactly right that many of us go through the same experiences. Blog growing pains, perhaps? We each have to figure out what will work best for us in handling the blog beast before it gets out of control! I am not going anywhere – I plan to stick around for the long run, for sure!
