Friend Friday: 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Me

This week’s Friend Friday topic is a bit more informal.  Instead of focusing on the ins and outs of fashion and blogging, this time Katy switched the focus to us as individuals.  Participants are to share 10 random facts about ourselves  that people may be surprised to know.

I almost didn’t participate this week because I feel like I have actually shared the most interesting things about me here and here.  I wasn’t sure I could really come up with ten more, but here they are!

1. I am a film fanatic.  I have been known to hit the festival circuit over the years and have been fortunate enough to attend both the Toronto and Tribeca Film Festivals.  Being a Cleveland girl, I have also gone to the Cleveland International Film Festival every year for as long as I can remember.  Some might call me a film snob, but I don’t discriminate between blockbusters, independent releases, classics, etc.  I love to watch them all.  If I am flipping channels on the TV, there are certain movies that will make me stop every time:

2.  Some of you may already know this, but I have a crush on Marshall Mathers III, aka Eminem.  I have had a crush on him since the first time I heard “My Name Is…” in 1999. Don’t judge.

3.  My first real Halloween costume was a plastic Wonder Woman outfit. Do you remember those?  Before the days of the fancy-shmancy Halloween costumes children often have today, we wore bed sheets and went out like ghosts, or wore plastic costumes.  I found this photo online of someone else, but this is the same costume I wore! Classy, right? No matter how badly I wanted to, I just didn’t look like Lynda Carter

4.  I have yet to find a television show that I love as much as I loved Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  Every week, I would watch Buffy and her friends battle the demons and/or vampires that served as an allegory to the trials and tribulations of growing up. Genius. Pure genius. And the writing? Phenomenal.

5. I jumped out of a plane once. It was a tandem jump, so I was strapped to a professional skydiver who knew what he was doing. I was fine up until the moment that I stepped to the edge of the plane. We jumped, and then I decided I wanted to change my mind. Too late. I swore all the way down.

Then, after surviving, I wanted to do it again!

This is exactly what sky-diving was like for me...

6. I hate the idea of strangers touching me. It makes me uncomfortable and twitchy. As a result, I have always shied away from professional massages because the very idea of them freaked me out. That is, until this past March. During our vacation, we ended up going to the Santé Wellness Center and Spa in Roatan, Honduras. I had my first real massage that day, and it was – in a word – heavenly.

I don't think I would enjoy a Spock massage...

7. The nicest compliment I ever received was from a former ex-bf who said that I looked like Laetitia Casta. We are both brunettes. We both have blue eyes. We have similar coloring. Unfortunately, that is where the resemblance ends! Clearly, my ex needed glasses, but nevertheless, I smile every time I think of that!

I wish I looked like this...

8. Although I enjoy Strawberry Twizzlers, I hate black licorice with a passion. I can’t stand the taste (I think it’s the anise). I can’t stand the smell. Yuck.

Since I am talking about dislikes, I can also add that I don’t like the taste of rum in desserts. It can be a pretty common ingredient in Serbian desserts, and for the longest time my mother would try to trick me and say there wasn’t any in whatever it was she had made. Unfortunately for her, I could always tell. I could taste it. I could smell it. And I didn’t like it. Still don’t.

Yet I absolutely LOVE Tortuga Rum Cakes. I know, it makes no sense.

Yummo!

9.  I know every single word. to the songs “Baby Got Back” and “The Humpty Dance.”  Can you sing along?

10.  I love watching scary movies.  I’m not taking about slasher movies like the usual Freddy and Jason flicks.  I am talking scary, psychological, get into your head and mess with your mind movies.  My favorites include:

When it comes to film & movies, you and I have to chat! I love horror, Buffy, and have worked at a few film festivals… it’s really my dream job.

Too funny – my dream job is to work for a Film Festival as well, either as the creative director or as a fundraiser. I’d be content with either 🙂

I’d be happy to talk films with you any day!

I love these kinds of posts. It’s always fun to read through them and think (or even out so loud) “I love that too!”. I definitely love movies and MOST definitely dislike black licorice. I don’t understand the people who think it’s good. Oh and I can’t believe you jumped out of a plane. I don’t think I would do that, not even if someone paid me! lol!

I think I might be a bit of an adrenaline junkie, hence the skydiving. I also adore rollercoasters and want to go Zip-Lining.

As for black licorice – I agree, I don’t understand the appeal at all. Even the scent makes me ill.

LOL on the plastic costumes! I had one of Sheera and swore I was just like her! I’m a scary movie fan too and I’ve seen all of those you’ve listed up there!

This was too much fun to read!

It’s always a joy to read about you! (That wasn’t creepy, right? I always feel like it’s hard to say something like that online without a bit of the creep factor finding its way in. Not my intent, of course!) Anyway. I absolutely love films! I always wished I could be a honest-to-goodness film intellectual, but certain things I can’t bring myself to watch. Like Eastern Promises. LOVE Viggo, I’ve heard that the film and his performance are magnificent, but I’m too much of a chicken to actually watch it. I’ve never seen The Godfather, etc. Needless to say, I’m not one for particularly scary films. I like a psychological thriller, but I tend to like the quiet sort. Stay, with Ryan Gosling and Ewan McGregor, is one I remember being quite fascinated with. Anyway, I’ve never been to a film festival but I’ve always dreamed of going to Sundance. I almost went to Chicago’s film festival last year, and now I’m regretting that I didn’t because two of the foreign films I was interested in haven’t been released around the States since.

Okay, rambling, sorry. Also have to say that I got that Tortuga Rum Cake as a gift years ago and never tried it! I don’t even know if I still have it. Darn.

HAH, not creepy at all! Thanks, doll. Eastern Promises is definitely a good film, and Viggo is wonderful in just about everything he is in (and he’s also an extremely talented artist as well, you should check his work out!). I can’t believe you’ve never seen The Godfather. You must remedy that, stat.

I’ve never seen Stay – I’ll have to add that to my netflix.

I am really involved with Cleveland’s film festival – I have actually helped select some of the films that play before (which means weeding out a lot of awful submissions, but it is so much fun!). Which films did you miss at Chicago’s fest?

You know, I have seen a bit of his artwork! I also heard his music, though I couldn’t quite get into that. (I still think he’s divine, just a bit over my head as musicians go.) I will definitely try to remedy the lack of Godfather in my movie-watching. It’s sad, the only way I recognize quotes from it are thanks to You’ve Got Mail! Ha.

Oh my goodness, I want that job! It sounds like fun, but I’d probably be terrible at it, afraid that I’d come across something like that supposedly horrific mutilation scene in Antichrist (I remember reading a review from Cannes last year where people were actually screaming for someone to turn it off). That’s where I’m not particularly well-rounded in cinema, I’ll usually skip that sort of thing. The films I missed in Chicago were Espion(s) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1149592/) and Effi Briest (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1035732/) which are French and German, respectively. I thought Espion(s) would make its way to Netflix given that it’s Guillaume Canet, but I haven’t happened across it yet. And Effi Briest just looked terribly pretty. (I can be quite the superficial movie-watcher, not gonna lie. lol!)

I love that there are a number of us FBFF bloggers who admitted to loving Eminem. I wonder why that is such a confession?! And who doesn’t love to sing along to Baby Got Back? And of course I’m with you on the Dirty Dancing movie, especially the scene you depicted. – Katy

I’m not sure why loving Eminem is such a big deal… maybe it has something to do with feminism? Who knows.

Interesting that there is also a lot of Baby Got Back love in the comments here as well! LOL

I think I would only skydive with a pro but would probably have the same reaction as you!

Skydiving with a pro is definitely the way to go. It gives you a sense of security, even though you feel like you are plummeting to your death during the free fall 🙂

I think The Shining is one of the most disturbing films ever made. But I love it!

I think Friend Friday is a really cool idea! It’s so amazing that you’ve been able to attend all those film festivals, I’m also kind of a movie buff myself and it’s my dream to attend Sundance and/or Tribeca :). About you looking like Laetitia Casta: I think that you probably do, at least a little! The thing is that we usually don’t see ourselves with the same ‘eyes’ as other people see us. We’re too hard on ourselves. Anyways your ex-bf gets an A+ in my book as far as compliments go! 😉

I’d love to go to Sundance one day. I actually prefer the Toronto Film Festival to Tribeca.

As for my Laetitia Casta looks – it’s nice of you to think that! LOL It was definitely a nice compliment on his part…
